A concert of choral and organ music from the liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Music composed for the Russian Orthodox liturgy contains some of the most sublime and beautiful choral music ever written. Music of the 18th century, exemplified in our concert by Bortnyanski, contains many of the traditional musical characteristics of Western church music. Later, during the 19th century, the music of Arensky, Glinka and Tchaikovsky took on a more distinctive style culminating in the early 20th century with the music of Rachmaninov. During the 20th and 21st centuries composers such as Stravinsky and Pärt put their own stamp on this tradition while retaining the overall musical characteristics of beauty and peace.
All proceeds from the concert will go to the Prior Park College Chapel Appeal, raising money for a major programme of repair and improvement.
Tickets £15 including refreshments, accompanied under-16s free.
