Prior Park College Chapel provides the perfect setting and a wonderful acoustic for A Handful of Singers' summer concert, a programme of finely wrought music by three masterly German romantic composers.
Mendelssohn's Te Deum in D, a richly scored work for double choir, soloists and continuo, harks back to Bach but demonstrates Mendelssohn's remarkable mastery of choral writing at the very young age of 17.
Rheinberger's sumptuous Mass in E flat for double choir, written 50 years later, clearly comes from the same tradition but is full of gloriously unpredictable inventiveness and interchange between the two choirs.
Reger's Sacred Songs Op. 138, are eight simple, effective a cappella settings of texts taken from the Deutsche Psalter, and complete a programme which, in the hands of this highly regarded chamber choir, will surely be a feast for the ears.
